The Rotten Fruit: A Guide to Creating Value and Serving with Excellence by Caleb Duah book cover

About the Book

A gift should be developed.

Your gift was never meant to go to waste. Everyone has something within them capable of creating value. It may be a gift, talent, skill, idea, or life experience. But possessing potential does not automatically make it valuable. It must be developed, refined, and used responsibly.

A piece of fruit can nourish, benefit, and satisfy, but only when it develops properly. Once it becomes rotten, its value is lost. The same can happen to what we carry. Our gifts can remain undeveloped, be rushed before they are ready, or be used in ways that do not benefit anyone.

The Rotten Fruit is a story-driven journey through development, value, and service. It will challenge you to understand what is inside you, increase its value, and present it in a way that serves others with excellence.

This is not simply a book about serving others at your own expense. It is about becoming a person of value. When you help others move toward what they need and want, you can also create meaningful opportunities, benefits, and fulfillment for yourself.

The Story

Before Daniel transfers the company, he must transfer what built it.

Daniel is a successful businessman and serial entrepreneur. One of his companies, a nationwide restaurant chain, is experiencing its best year yet. At the height of that momentum, Daniel makes an unexpected decision. It is time for him to step down.

He chooses his son, Leroy, as his successor. Leroy has spent seven years with the company and played an important role in its growth. But Daniel knows that experience and skill alone do not prepare someone to lead. He is not only considering what Leroy can do. He is examining his mind, his heart, and what he will produce when greater responsibility is placed in his hands.

Before Daniel can hand over the company, he must pass down the principles that helped him build everything from the ground up. Together, Daniel and Leroy journey through Daniel's past and explore nine principles about developing what is inside you, turning it into something valuable, and using that value to serve others.

The Principles

From what is inside you to what you give the world.

Part One: Development

01

Know who you are and what you bring

02

Life will shake you to your core

03

Be before you become

Part Two: Value

04

Everything must move in a direction

05

Value increases by subtracting, then multiplying

06

Chosen, and then choose

Part Three: Serving

07

The best way to get what you want is to help others get what they want

08

Serving is the standard

09

It is not about a thank-you. It is about fulfillment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Rotten Fruit about?

The Rotten Fruit is about developing your gifts, talents, skills, ideas, and experiences into something valuable. It explains why having potential is not enough and challenges readers to use what they carry responsibly, serve others with excellence, and create meaningful benefits for others and themselves.

Why is the book called The Rotten Fruit?

Fruit has the potential to nourish and benefit someone, but that value is lost when the fruit becomes rotten. The title represents what can happen when our gifts remain undeveloped, are rushed before they are ready, or are used in ways that do not benefit others. The book walks readers through how to prevent what is inside them from going to waste.

Who is this book for?

The book is for creatives, entrepreneurs, content creators, influencers, artists, thought leaders, emerging leaders, and anyone who wants their life and work to make a meaningful impact. It is especially relevant for people who know they have something valuable inside them but need help developing, refining, and presenting it.

How is the book structured?

The book follows Daniel, a successful entrepreneur preparing his son, Leroy, to succeed him as the leader of his company. Their journey unfolds across three sections: Development, Value, and Serving. Each section contains three chapters and introduces three principles of The Rotten Fruit.

Do I need to read the book in order?

Reading from beginning to end is recommended because each chapter builds on Daniel and Leroy's story. However, readers who want to focus on a particular stage can review the character and plot overview before beginning the section most relevant to them.

Is this book practical or primarily a story?

It is both. The principles are introduced through Daniel and Leroy's story, making them easier to understand and remember. Every chapter also concludes with a summary, key takeaways, and action items that help readers apply what they have learned.
